Mixed media works by Spiridoula Politis and Melanie Salerno will be featured as an exhibit titled "BOOM!" opening Saturday.

Well, Mother Nature certainly has a twisted sense of humor.  Disappointing, soul-crushing weather aside, April is off to a promising start; this weekend you can do everything from visit an art exhibition to see fitness demonstrations to attend a beer expo – all without leaving the ‘Ville.

Friday, April 1

Eastern European Printmakers Today at the Brickbottom Artists Gallery

12 – 5 p.m.

The Brickbottom Artists Association is hosting an exhibition of the work of Eastern Europe’s premier printmakers, in collaboration with Massachusetts College of Art, Muskat Studios and Amazing Things Art Center.

New England Real Ale eXhition at the George Dilboy VFW Post

6 – 10:30 p.m.

The New England Real Ale eXhibition (NERAX) offers a pleasant, pub-like atmosphere in which to sample and enjoy cask-conditioned beer and ale.  Most of the beers made available are American and British in origin. NERAX is organized by CASC, the Cask-conditioned Ale Support Condition.  Tickets are $15.

The Boston – NYC Poetry Slam Grudge Match at The Center for Arts at the Armory

7 – 10 p.m.

The Boston Poetry Slam will be hosting the ultimate throw-down tonight at the Armory. Eight poetry slammers from Boston will go toe to toe with eight of their their NYC counterparts. The grudge match is a National Poetry Month event, and is being produced by April Ranger and the Boston Poetry Slam and Poetry Slam, Inc., and will benefit the 2011 Poetry Slam, which is slated to occur in Boston in August. Tickets are $10.

Saturday, April 2

Second Annual Mayor’s Fitness Challenge at Somerville High School

10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone invites the community to participate in his second annual “Mayor’s Fitness Challenge” at the Somerville High School gymnasium this Saturday.  There will be a farmer’s market, face painting, fitness demonstrations, an opportunity to take a Lifestyle Pledge, and other family-friendly programming.

American Legion Unit #19 Annual Bazaar and Penny Sale at Post #19

12 – 3 p.m.

American Legion Unit #19 is hosting their annual Bazaar and Penny Sale this Saturday. The Bazaar will feature a raffle with multiple prizes; all proceeds will benefit local veterans and area V.A. hospitals.

“BOOM!” at The Washington Street Art Center

12 – 4 p.m.; 6 -9 p.m.

The Washington Street Art Center will be opening and celebrating its new exhibition,“BOOM”.  “BOOM!” invites you to come see things that go BOOM!,’ and asks, “what does “boom” mean to you?”  The exhibition opens at noon; the opening reception will begin at 6 p.m. The reception will include refreshments and live music by James Forrest.

Tickets are $10.

Sunday, April 3

Ourstage in the Round at Johnny D’s

9 p.m.

Johnny D’s Ourstage in the Round series continues with performances by Kim Davidson, Beth DeSombre, and Licia Sky.  If acoustic performances rooted in Americana and folk traditions are your thing, then seeing these three women perform is how you should end your weekend.
