Squares #3: Kevin, Adrianna and Leonardo, Bloc 11 Open Mic

by Jess Bean on August 23, 2010

Bloc 11 hosts open mic night Thursdays in Union Square. The performers are talented, strange, mystical, salty, and juvenile, in turn. The crowd is supportive. Everyone is fashionable.

Kevin, musician

Kevin: “These are my son’s pants. I had to wear them because I don’t have any clean laundry. I also don’t own any pants without holes in them.

“This vest I’ve had for years now. I used to be in a band called the Drunken Unkles…had it since then. I painted it myself. I’m a painter. I paint everything – ruin all my shoes and clothes that way!

“I don’t like collars so I cut them all off.”

Kevin was also accessorizing with some Marlboros in the pocket and killer biker boots. He’s a regular at Bloc 11’s open mic nights and you can find his slow-sludge, gothic guitar tunes here.

Adrianna, musician, and unnamed stand partner

Unfortunately, Adrianna ran away before I could interview her about her outfit.

Most artists and patrons at Bloc 11 were dressed in glorified grubbies – but not Adrianna. She increased the glam factor of the whole evening by at least 17 percent just by showing up. I enjoyed her flower headband, her multiple strings of fake pearls, her bright fuchsia dress and her rhinestone heels. When people like Adrianna bring their A-game to a Thursday night cafe show, I get inspired.

Leonardo, sonneteer

Leonardo is a damn good poet. He is also a consummate geek!

Leonardo: “The guy who sold me my coffee tonight thought my [Adult Swim] T-shirt might be ‘vintage’ because he’d never seen one before. But c’mon, I remember the days before there even was Adult Swim. Cartoon Network only showed regular cartoons, and then at 11 [p.m] they’d have paid programming or something. But then they started to show ‘Cowboy Bebop’ and ‘InuYasha’ and ‘Fooly Cooly!’ Aw, those are the best shows. I mean, what could be better than apocalyptic bounty-hunters? At first they only played these shows from, like, 11-2 [at night], and then they’d replay the whole program until 6 a.m. I thought, ‘How do they know that I’d stay up the whole time to watch it all again?’”
