Monday, Jan. 17

MLK Jr. Day Celebration Event at Somerville High School

11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Join Mayor Joseph Curtatone, the Somerville Human Rights Commission, and Somerville Public Schools at the High School auditorium for a celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration entitled “Realizing King’s Dream Through Youth Action.”  The event will feature keynote speaker Robert Lewis Jr. of the Boston Foundation, as well as entertainment by the SHS Dance Team, the Kennedy School Choir, St. James Episcopal Church Choir, Argenziano School Choir and the Nepali Sherpa Youth Dance Group.  Light refreshments will be served.

Stump Team Trivia at Bull McCabe’s

8 – 11 p.m.

Teams of up to six can play Stump Trivia at Bull McCabe’s Monday evening, answering questions ranging from popular culture to literature to physics (and everything in between).  Admission is free; beers are not.  21+

Tuesday, Jan. 18

First and Last Word Poetry Series at The Center for Arts at the Armory

6:30 – 10 p.m.

The First and Last Word Poetry Series will feature readings by well-respected poets Ifeanyi Menkiti, Doug Holder and Lloyd Schwartz.  An open mic will follow the readings, which will be held in the Cafe at the Armory.  Admission is $4; all ages are welcome.

Wednesday, Jan. 19

“Secure Communities” Panel Discussion at Suffolk University

11 a.m. – 12 p.m.

This one will be worth leaving the ‘Ville.  Somerville-based Centro Presente is holding a panel discussion on “Secure Communities” — part of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement Only policy that may see enforcement statewide — at Suffolk University’s Amenities Room.  Panelists will include Daniel Kanstroom of the International Human Rights Program, Laura Rotolo of the Massachusetts ACLU and Oscar Chacon of the National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities.

Thursday, Jan. 20

Exchange Your Ways with the Swapaholics at The Center for Arts at the Armory

5 – 10 p.m.

The Swapaholics are ringing in the new year and celebrating National Swap Day by throwing their first all-ages swap at the Armory.  Items being swapped will include clothing, shoes, accessories, handbags, jewelry, books, CDs, cassette tapes, DVDs, Blu-Ray, VHS, and video games.  Items must be in no worse than lightly used condition.  There will also be live music, as well as samples from local restaurants, retailers, and indie artisans.  Admission with a bag of items to swap is $15; without is $20.

Open Mic with Kristen Ford at Bloc 11 Cafe

7 – 9p.m.

Kristen Ford, who has been booking shows  at Bloc 11 for more than a year now, will host the cafe’s weekly open mic night, featuring several seasoned songwriters from around the city.  Sign-up starts at 6 p.m.; music will commence at 7 p.m.
